My house has a rooftop where I’d sit on some nights, legs up, Mozart playing in the background while I stargaze. In moments like this, I don’t feel detached from the things around me; I don’t feel like a small fleck in the universe; I don’t feel helpless. I’m staring at the night sky spread above and around me, and I’m thinking, “Damn, this is art”, and the way it makes me feel? I’m not sure I have the words to do justice to it as it is one of those things that exposes the limits of language, but I’m going to try.
Art is food, and no, I’m not talking about the various creative plating techniques we’ve managed to come up with. Art is the explosion of taste in your mouth when you try out the burger in a new place and you simply love it. It is chocolate and wine date with your best friend while you talk about the secrets of the universe. It is the all you can eat buffet where you fill up your plate with food that has name you can’t pronounce with the hope that you can keep it down. It is the feeling you get when your girlfriend sends you a surprise cake to brighten your mood, or when your partner picks up dinner from your favourite restaurant.
Art is the human form. The creator really took time with us, didn’t he? Art is every dip and every curve on your lover’s body; it is the gracefulness of their neck, and the way they chew their lower lip when they are in deep thought. It is the way your eyes brighten up when you see them and the answering smile that spreads on their lips.
Art is love. It is the overwhelming emotion a mother feels when her newborn baby is placed in her arms; It is crying in the arms of your best friend and knowing that you’re not alone in the world; it is the feeling of a thousand noisy butterflies taking up residence in your stomach when your crush passes, it is also the cool front you put up when they say hi, and you try not to drool over them. It is the warm hugs from the people that matter, the forehead kisses, the soft kisses that become deep passionate kisses. It is the man watching his wife walk down the aisle in the most beautiful dress he has ever seen, while La Vi En Rose plays in the background. It is in the exchange of vows and renewal of love every single day for the rest of their lives. It is the people that come through for you when you need them, living proof that love is indeed an action word. It is falling asleep in the arms of the one you love and waking up to find them staring at you like you are the eighth wonder of the world.
Art is passion. It is the fire that burns within you and drives the greatness with which you are capable of. It is the voice that tells you that you are born for greatness; the voice that tells you that the sky is your starting point. It is the reason you pick yourself back up from the floor, the reason you dare to belief. Art is the mother of all inventions, the bedrock of all forms of creativity.
Art is freedom! It’s the road trip with friends; the night drives with your head out the window, as you breathe in the clean night air and sing off key to some country song playing on the radio. It is thing that tells you that you can be whoever you want to be, believe in whatever you want to believe, but most of all, believe in yourself. It is the thing that lets you derive you own meaning out of your life and your reality, and let’s you know that it is alright to think for yourself. Art is putting yourself first. it is the deep, cleansing breaths you take to calm yourself. It is the Saturdays you spend with yourself doing what you love without guilt. It is dancing in your underwear on a Sunday morning, getting all the moves wrong. It is also dancing in a room full of people, moving like you’re made of just wind and magic.
Art is serenity. It is waking up with a clear head for the first time in a long time. It is the warm, toasty feeling of the sun on your skin after it has been raining for eight days straight. It is the beautiful smile that lights up your face and makes your eyes dance. You know, those ones you feel deep down in your soul. It is the unawkward silence you share with your favourite person, the wind on your face as you ride a bike, the feeling that envelopes you when you take a bubble bath. It is sharing a blunt with your friends; it is reading a book that swaps your reality.
Art is magic. Not the bibity babity boo kind, or the wingardium Leviosa kind. (Don’t tell the Potter heads I said that). I’m talking about the magical feeling of picking one single human being and knowing that your souls were made to find each other, and if the theory of multiverses is indeed true, then your souls would have found each other in every single multiverse that exists. Art is the toothy smile on your child’s face as they reach their arms out to you and call “dada”, saying their first word.
Art is acceptance. It is looking yourself in the mirror and smiling happily at the person that stares back at you. It is looking at the scars that line your skin and not thinking less of yourself for them. It is picking someone to be your favourite person and accepting them, quirks and all, even if that person is you. Especially when that person is you.
Art is ugly. Art forces you to dig into yourself and bring out everything you find within- the good, the bad and the extremely messy. Art forces you to focus on all your emotions, and makes you do the dirty work of dealing with them. Art is loneliness and despair. It is melancholy. It is that gaping hole within you that you are trying to fill. It picks you up, tears you down and creates something entirely different. Some of the best works of art were created out of some form of despair- You are probably thinking of a few now. Art feels like going through hell in a mine to dig out gem stones.
Finally, art is a promise. Art says to me, in all its form that I appreciate, it says, ” I’ll never leave you.” Human emotions are fickle and they come and go like the wind, but art endures as you carry a piece of it with you everywhere. It is all around you, making its presence felt even when you’re oblivious to it. Art is a promise of comfort, peace, relief, heck, anything you need it to be. Art says, “If you reach for me, I’ll be there”, and you know it’s true, because why else do you turn to music, dancing, painting, writing and whatever form of expression you favour when you’re sad?
You’re a work of art. Your existence is the finest piece you can create. Create magic.
